About us

Ikhaya Labantu is a grassroots NGO that provides residential (full-time, live-in) care to 34 frail and/or disabled persons from the poorest communities of Langa and surroundings by running the Ikhaya Labantu Care Home in Johnson Ngwevela Street, Langa, Cape Town.

It is one of very few places where families who do not have the means, space or capacity themselves, can turn to get residential care for their frail or disabled family members. In running the care home, Ikhaya Labantu provides gainful employment to approx. 20 staff from the Langa area (nurses, carers, kitchen staff, laundry/cleaning staff), and also serves as a place where students in personal care can do their practical training.

History

Ikhaya Labantu was started in 1986 by Nobuntu Nkanyuza, (“Mambona”), one of the original “brave heart”-women of the townships at that time, initially as Ikhaya Labantu Homeless Shelter. It has been operating in its current form as a home of frail and disabled people for about 15 yrs.

Mambona sadly passed away in 2025. She is missed daily, but her legacy lives on in the care, love and dignity given to each person in the Ikhaya Labantu family.

A management team is in place to carry the day-to-day operations and take Ikhaya forward.

Ikhaya Labantu was registered as a non-profit organization (NPO) in 1986, and as a public benefit organization (PBO) with SARS in 2016. As a PBO in good standing, Ikhaya Labantu is tax exempt and is able to issue Section 18A tax certificates for all donations received.
